The Pawnee County Humane Society is looking for caregivers to provide foster homes for dogs and cats up for adoption. Because of the large number of intakes this summer, Pawnee County needs to expand its network of foster pet parents. If you could provice a foster home, transportation or fuel to help homeless animals find a permanent home, then please call the Pawnee County Humane Society at 620-282-2992.
The Pawnee County Humane Society will sponsor its annual dog swim from 4 until 7:30 Monday, September 6th at the Larned City Pool. The event will feature costume contests, prizes, food and a micro-chip I.D. Clinic. Admission is $5 per dog. All proceeds will go to the Pawnee County Humane Society. You are invited to participate in the annual POW-MIA Recognition Day and Flag Retirement Ceremony at 1 PM, Saturday September 18th at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend. The event will feature a memorial recognition ride, aircraft flyover, flag retirement and dedication ceremony. Sponsored by the American Legion and Legion Riders of Argonne Post #180.
The Santa Fe Trail Center is hosting an exhibit of photographs through Labor Day. The exhibit consists of entries by amateur photographers from the recent Pawnee County Fair. The Santa Fe Trail Center is two miles west of Larned on highway 156 and is open seven days a week through Labor Day.

This Labor Day weekend, the Fort Larned National Historic Site invites you to step back in time during its annual living history weekend on the Santa Fe Trail. Re-enactors will demonstrate life at the fort during the mid 1800s. Guided tours will be given along with artillery demonstrations and a special art exhibit in the visitors center.

On Friday, September 3rd, Great Bend Firefighters will conduct their annual "Boot Block" fund raiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Fire Fighters will be at 3 major business location in Great Bend with their boots so shoppers and motorists can give to help area children and adults battling nero-muscular diseases.

Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack #130 will be collecting non-perishable food items along the parage route during the Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 6th in Hoisington. Bring non-perishable food items to the parade so they can be collected by the scouts. All food collected will be donated to the Hoisington Food Bank to help feed the hungry in the area.


The KANS for kids fighting cancer will sponser its first-ever Run for Hope fund raising event at 7:30 AM, Saturday, September 18th at the Ellinwood City Park. Sign up now for a 5K and 10K run-walk along the one mile fun run for kids 12 and under. Registration deadline is September 5th. The event will be held in conjunction with the Ride for Hope Car Show in Ellinwood.
The KANS for kids fighting cancer foundation reminds you that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. You can help by purchasing a one dollare Childhood Cancer Ribbon at participating businesses in Great Bend, Ellinwood and Hoisington. All proceeds will go to the KANS for kids fighting cancer foundation to assist Barton County children in their fight against cancer.


The Living Joy Community Church in Hoisington will host a pancake and sausage fund raising breakfast from 7 until 9 AM on Labor Day Monday, September 6th in the church basement. Take out will be available with free will donations accepted at the door. All proceeds will go to the Christopher Schneweis medical assistance fund.
If you are a car enthusiast, then join the car clubs in the Great Bend area for the next Shine and Show from 6 until 10 PM on Friday, September 10th at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend. This is a come and go gathering, spectators are welcome and food will be available for purchase. This is the final Shine and Show for the season, so be sure to stop by.


Join the American Red Cross during its Red Cross Racing Promotion to get points and win prizes when you give blood. The next community blood drive will be from 1:30 until 5:45 PM on Monday, September 13th at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center, 110 East Williamson in Claflin. All blood types are needed and walk-ins are welcome.

Become a member of the American Red Cross life saving team by donating blood. You might help save the life of an accident victim, cancer patient, a neighbor or a friend. Stop by St. Rose auditorium in Great Bend from 11:30 until 6:30 PM on Monday, September 20th. All blood types are needed, walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are given priority.
If you have the cutest, prettiest or the most photogenic pet on the block, then enter their picture in the 2011 calendar contest, sponsored by the Pawnee County Humane Society. Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice will sponsor weekly grief support group meetings in Great Bend through November 1st. The group will meet every Monday night at 6:30 PM in the basement of Central Kansas Medial Center, 3515 Broadway in Great Bend. Sessions will be lead by qualified co-facilitators.
